health hubs
Until we secure funding to trial a unit in a shopping mall or High Street, we can utilize vacant dental surgeries, such as those previously operated by BUPA.
A qualified nurse, accompanied by a receptionist and offering online booking, can provide an affordable alternative for individuals seeking guidance on their dental needs without the stress often associated with a traditional dental practice. This prevention-focused unit will not use drills, ensuring a comfortable and welcoming environment for all.

TAKE BACK CONTROL OF THE PROFESSION
During Brexit, the phrase “Take Back Control” became widely recognised in relation to borders. Perhaps, as a profession, we now need to encourage both the dental team and the public to take back control of their health.
Evidence shows that traditional silver amalgam fillings often lasted longer, were quicker to place, and were less technique-sensitive. This made them a practical and affordable option within a large publicly funded system such as the NHS.
However, there is simply not enough funding to treat everyone repeatedly for a largely preventable disease. We therefore need to develop a more affordable service built around prevention, early intervention, and minimally invasive dentistry.

A business model based on prevention and MID could reduce costs for the public while creating better, more sustainable income for dental teams. To achieve this, we need to collaborate, share knowledge, support each other, and build services that are practical, ethical, and prevention-led.
We need an organisation that looks after both the public and the profession. Without action, dentistry risks drifting into a system that becomes increasingly corporate, expensive, and disconnected from prevention — with dental professionals left exposed and the public left without affordable care.
